We recently found a small enclave of people living in a small town along I-94 northwest of Minneapolis. Amongst them was a doctor, which we were badly in need of ever since Robert caught a ricochet in his right leg. I didn't like his demeanor right from the start, but since we had little other choice, we traded some food for his services and some medical supplies. His repair was serviceable but did not strike me as the work of a master.
The rest of the group was scarcely better. A small family too afraid to even look out a window, a local grocer that had opened his store to the town's use, and a few scattered other people. We explained that if they stayed there long enough, they would be surrounded and wiped out like the other holdouts that we had run across, but most of them didn't want to hear any of it. In the end, one man, Jeff Ryland, joined us. He had lost the rest of his family in the first weeks of the Change and he realized that he would rather get out and see the world than sit cooped up in a small store, waiting to die. We were glad to have the extra hand, and he added a few small arms to our growing arsenal.
It's good to know the location of a competent doctor in the event that we are in need of his services again, but I doubt that if we were to return that he and his band would still be amongst the living. Karina said a small prayer for them as we pulled away.
Creepy. Reminds me of "Dr. Giggles" that I saw as a 13-year-old girl at a slumber party which gave me nightmares for weeks, along with Pet Cemetary, which amazingly did not scare me quite as badly. I saw it later when I was 25 and laughed my ass off it was so stupid.
